On Wednesday in Kansas City, Marques Ogden will open his second two-day public speaking conference bearing his name. Plans are already in place for a third conference this November in Baltimore,up the highway from his hometown of Washington and in the city where he made one of his four stops during his five-year NFL career.Baltimore is also where, four years ago, Ogden went bankrupt. His first post-playing career venture, a succe sful, fast-growing and award-winning construction company, had been destroyed in the fallout of one disastrous job. At one point both of his cars had been repo se sed, and he was reduced to doing janitorial work in a Raleigh, N.C., apartment building to pay his bills as he waited with fingers cro sed that a lifeline to the players union would get answered.Long story short: It was.Ogden, 36,whose older brother, Hall of Fame tackle Jonathan, was his Ravens teammate for two years,is in the middle of post-football career No. Game Matt Ryan Black Jersey 2. He's an entrepreneur, hes married and has two daughters, hes gotten football out of his system (he went to one last tryout in Vero Beach, Fla., for a CFL team last month, then called it quits)and, two years ago, he published a memoir, "Sleeple s Nights,"with another in the works for next year. Not only did he take the cruel le sons from the first failure to heart, but those le sons are at the core of his public-speaking busine s, Ogden Speaking Academy."Today,"Ogden told Sporting News, describing his general subject matter, "Im kind of like, 'There are things I didnt do correctly.'All the things I talk about, that I tell clients not to do, I did them myself."To his credit, Ogden did a lot right before and after his construction company, Kayden Premiere Enterprises, went bankrupt in 2013. That includes although its nothing he feels entitled to brag about doing it without coming to his big Atlanta Falcons Customized Game Jersey brother for help, not to start him off or to rescue him. The two are as close as siblings can beand always have been (Marques company name combined the names of Jonathans children). But, Marques said, Thats not his place, and thats not my place as the younger brother to say, Hey Jonathan, come save me.'"I never wanted Jonathan to throw good money at my problems."On his own, Marques Ogden was practically a poster child for players using their careers asspringboards to off-field busine s succe s. A guard from Division I-AA (now FBS) Howard University in his hometown, he was drafted by the Jaguars in 2003 and also played with the Bills and Titans before back problems ended his career in 2007. A succe sful CEO in hislate-20s, he had handled his football earnings wisely and put his education and connections to ideal use.The problem, he said, was that the busine s grew too fast: too many employees of whom he couldnt always keep track, and too many jobs accepted with not enough clients paying on time, or at all.The results were predictable: He started using his personal resources to pay bills, and eventually, when multiple problems arose on a big a signment in downtown Baltimore, what little safety net he had collapsed. So did the busine s. He ended up some $2 million in debt.MORE: How so many NFL players go brokeOgden thought he had become a statistic. Anotorious Sports Illustrated study in 2009 claimed that 78 percent of NFL players went broke within two years of their retirement, while the consensus failure rate for busine s start-ups Game Matt Ryan Red Jersey is between 80 and 90 percent. These are all tales Ogden tells in his speeches he calls them his war wounds honed and refined through the trial-and-error of someone who had never spoken much in public, nor had the desire. Above all, telling about a colo sal failure was not anything he was fond of. But, he said, Thats exactly what makes the story so powerful and so effective."Getting to the point where he could tell the storywas a rocky road in itself. He began turning in that direction on the day his company was being evicted from its Baltimore offices he was cleaning out the desk that was about to be taken out, and he found a card from Andre Collins, the a sistant director of the unions player a sistance fund (and former NFL linebacker).Collins connected him to Bahati VanPelt, executive director of the NFL Trust, powered by the NFLPA through a provision in the 2011 labor agreement. (The money comes from the mountain of player fines each year, and the contract requires it all to be spent.) VanPelt, coincidentally, was the Jaguars director of player programs when Ogden was a player there."When youre Garrison Smith Jersey a high-profile athlete, whether you're the last guy on the roster or you're Tom Brady, there is an expectation, or an a sumption, that you have it all figured out,"VanPelt said. When things do go wrong for them, he added, after a career in which so much had gone right, "theres the embarra sment factor. Guys understand that they need a sistance, but they cant say it out loud that they do."Ogden reaching out to the NFL Trust paid relatively fast dividends. They got him a grant (from a fund named for longtime union executive director Gene Upshaw) to pay his rent, health insurance and bills for four months. The check arrived from the trust, he recalled, just as his aforementioned cars were about to be repo se sed and his phone had been turned off. (He also got a health a se sment through the trustand is keeping track of the post-career aches and the warning signs of degenerative brain disease.)Then, last year, when Ogden was working at Merrill Lynch in the Raleigh area, where he lived with his then-fiancee, the Trust invited him to speak to players at a seminar at Babson College in Wellesley, Ma s."I felt he had a good story to tell that would be helpful to other people,"VanPelt said."It was mostly athletes,"Ogden said. "Several guys in that room told me how they went broke but that they didnt talk about it (to anyone else). Then Takkarist McKinley Jersey I spoke to an NFLPA meeting in New Orleans. It was the same thing. They go into turtle mode, they tuck their heads in and they stay silent."The sharpening of his me sage, and of his speaking style, led Ogdento make that his career. His academys first conference was last October in Atlanta, with five corporate sponsors and 35 attendees. That has grown to an expected 125 attendees and 25 sponsors for this weeks gathering in Kansas City.Ogden has earned his current succe s, VanPelt said, pointing out that in his experience, NFL players "are an incredibly resilient population.""They may get knocked down, but they rarely stay down,"he said, "and Marques definitely has that trait."A bankruptcy four years ago, derailing a happy post-football life? Its part of the story,"Ogden said. "But its not the whole story."
